Hi, I’m Nikki.
Nice to meet you.
When I booked a long weekend to venture out of the office back in April 2021, I didn’t quite anticipate that a four day absence would extend to nearly four months. A cycling trip in Wales with friends ended abruptly when I managed to veer off the road and hit a tree - at speed, travelling downhill.
As well as breaking my jaw and losing a tooth (which I’m still upset about), I sustained a brain injury which left me confused, forgetful and altogether a little lost.
Since then, I have come face to face with multiple challenges - from dealing with the physical effects to overcoming the far more complex mental implications. All while trying to navigate who I want to be as a leader in a growing creative agency.
Writing this blog helps me to think through the challenges and work out the lessons. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.
As the Managing Director of a London-based branding and design agency, I felt a responsibility to my team who I had left behind without any warning for what felt like a very very long time.
But despite my eagerness to get back to work, my brain and my body had other plans. Picking up where things left off wasn’t going to be easy; it seemed a significant adjustment was needed, together with a huge dose of patience - something which doesn’t exactly come naturally to me.
Not long after my return, I wrote an article for Mediatel about my experience, sort of as a way to process it all. The response from friends, colleagues and peers was overwhelming. It soon became clear that by sharing the ups and downs of my recovery - with all the unexpected and at times bizarre detail - might prove helpful for some of the hundreds of people who suffer brain injuries every year - and those around them.
This is my story, in real time - I have no idea what each chapter will bring, but I hope you’ll join me on the journey (avoiding all trees along the way).
